My kids keep asking me when our first day of school will be. Some of them have been begging to start early.

They've seen the packages that have started being delivered.. stuff I ordered last week when I had my school planning day ...and they are super curious and so excited! (And so am I... anybody play the Ukulele? We will be this year!)

I try to make the first week of school really fun. The first day of school is always a bit of a party. Here are some of the fun ideas I've done to make the first day extra special for the kids.

  1. Get them to bed at a good time the night before! This is one of the best things you can do for your first day to go smoothly.

  2. Decorate! Even if it's just the kitchen table or their bedroom doors. If you've come up with a theme for the year, this can be a lot of fun.

  3. Wake them up with music!

  4. Have a yummy breakfast. Some years this has been a fancy hot breakfast. Some years it's their favorite cold cereal.

  5. Have a PJ day or a "dress up and take pictures day"... Depending on what's fun for you and your kids.

  6. Give them their new books and school supplies as a present. In our home, sometimes they're in gift bags, sometimes wrapped, sometimes just set out in piles. I personally am a fan of "brown paper packages, tied up with strings" (these are a few of my favorite thing! Ha! The Sound of Music movie... we're big fans around here).

  7. Paint or draw self-portraits! (This would be a great time for a read-aloud if they're old enough to not need too much help with the art supplies).

Keep it a light-upbeat day. When it starts feeling like they're getting done, let it be done. Clean up together with fun music and call it a day!

If you're a seasoned homeschool mama, I'd love to hear what fun things you've done with your family! Pease share!

It's going to be a great year!

You can do it, Mama!
